Drogin is a regular visitor to our boat from September through to December. Most sharks are naturally more cautious around the baits but not Drogin…..he is a real player! His favourite trick is to disappear under the boat were he can’t be seen by our bait handlers, then rocket straight vertically up, often coming away with his prize in his mouth fully air born out of the water. Bait handlers be on your guard when this boy is around!
Data from Drogin and other tagged sharks reveal that come late December, he migrates to a vast area in the mid Pacific. This habitat has been labeled the Shared Offshore Foraging Area, aka SOFA. Precisely why these predators visit SOFA remains a mystery but some suggest it is to hunt rather than reproduce. Only Drogin has the true answer to why he makes this great migration each year before returning to Guadalupe each July.
